Asian Odyssey

Dear Friends,
As the holiday season approaches, we are making busy preparations for our Asian sojourn beginning Jan. 3rd 2010. Instead of holiday greeting cards, I’m starting a blog this year to take all of you on our journey as well, if you are so inclined. Buckle up! Depending on what moves me, expect to hear from us at least once a month –perhaps more. We’ll be in Hong Kong for some months — a city of 7 million people and 10,000 restaurants! Very important statistics to me! While Bob will be teaching and working on a book, I plan to reenergize and focus more on my creative side. This means learning some Chinese vegetarian cooking, observing, photographing and writing about what I see, updating my technological skills and also connecting with our family and old friends
My roots are in Asia and I’m actually pretty familiar with Chinese culture because Singapore has a predominantly Chinese population, though I also do know that Hong Kong Chinese are quite different from their Singapore brethren. We’ll also be visiting various Chinese universities on the mainland where Bob has been invited to lecture. He will also be speaking at Tokyo University and in Kyoto. Singapore is also on our agenda –of course, how could it not be? I can barely wait to once again taste our favorite hawker food there¬ Mee Goreng, Murtabak, Laksa, Roti Prata, Nasi Lemak, Indian Rojak, Chilli Crabs ……..this list is actually very long! Before I get too carried away, let me and my family wish all of you an exceedingly Happy Holiday season and here’s to 2010. Even though 2009 has been positively dismaying at times, we’re still here, the glaciers -though depleted, have not all melted, the economy shows some hopeful signs –the hemorrhaging has stopped or slowed dramatically and recovery must come soon. We have much to be thankful for. Till the next post,
Zai Jian! (goodbye/see you later in Mandarin),
Naseem and Bob

    Naseem and Bob-
How we envy you, esp. Jose who loves Hong Kong. With us, you never know if we might decide to come over.
You have whet our appetites for the hawker food – I suggest you post one recipe a month for us to try.
Best wishes for the western and later eastern new years.
