A few weeks ago while I was cutting back and struggling with the pruning of an overgrown rose bush in our yard, I decided to do something creative with the thorny branches that would have otherwise been relegated to the recycling heap. The idea to fashion a wild and rustic wreath from rose branches and wispy twigs from a weeping beech actually came from a spread in Living Magazine featuring the work of New York designer Emily Thompson [emilythompsonflowers.com]. I loved the fact that she used foraged branches, seeds and pods and fashioned magic with hardly any other embellishments. I’ve been looking around our late Fall garden and tried to salvage whatever I could to do the same. I also decided to take a class to find out a little more about more traditional wreath-making. I’d forgotten how satisfying it is to make things with your own hands.
