Rustic wreath on the shed in our backyard
Rustic wreath on the shed in our backyard

A few weeks ago while I was cutting back and struggling with the pruning of an overgrown rose bush in our yard, I decided to do something creative with the thorny branches that would have otherwise been relegated to the recycling heap. The idea to fashion a wild and rustic wreath from rose branches and wispy twigs from a weeping beech actually came from a spread in Living Magazine featuring the work of New York designer Emily Thompson [emilythompsonflowers.com]. I loved the fact that she used foraged branches, seeds and pods and fashioned magic with hardly any other embellishments. I’ve been looking around our late Fall garden and tried to salvage whatever I could to do the same. I also decided to take a class to find out a little more about more traditional wreath-making. I’d forgotten how satisfying it is to make things with your own hands.

Very fun, Naseem. Reminds me of a holiday party I attended years ago when everyone was asked to arrive with a handmade ornament crafted from found materials. Mine was an angel with milkweed pod wings. The very best of the holiday season to you and yours!

Beautiful! After walking through English Gardens I found it hard to part with my money for evergreen branches, so I came home and cut two different evergreens, my arborvitaes and my holly and filled two pots also sprayed branches with white spray paint for another pot. Less cost, more enjoyable and almost professional. Plus I don’t feel guilty discarding them after the winter. Happy holiday and looking forward to seeing you and Bob.

Hey June how about sending me a photo — your arrangement sounds really cool! Is’nt it so much more fun to come up with our own creations!
