The sounds of beating drums, the cymbals of the lion dancers, and twirling dragons manipulated by athletic young men is a memory that I always associate with the Chinese New Year. Growing up in Singapore, we kids would be attracted like bees to honey when these dancers and other simple floats came by our neighborhood. And there used to be firecrackers – lots of them, until they were banned. Those neighborhood parades have now evolved into an extravaganza of color reflecting not just Chinese elements but also the traditions of the minorities in this country – the Malays, the Indians, the Eurasians and others. This grand parade now called Chingay is a showcase of cosmopolitan Singapore. Take a look.
